Pilgrimage to Iceland by John Wilhelmsson is a one hundred and forty-two page journal of John's trip from San Jose, Ca. to Reykjavik. John and his father had planned a trip to his homeland in Iceland. Two years after his father's death, John decides to still take the trip, alone. It is not only to honor his father's memory but also to help him overcome his grief. The story is very personal and spiritual. Several times he quotes bible verses.This story does not really have any dialogue. It follows John's actual notes from the trip and includes several pictures. This would normally bother me. I don't like the narrator telling me everything, however in this book I was completely sucked into the story and did not mind at all. In fact I was so engrossed in John's life that I finished the book in one sitting. I am not sure if it was his spiritual journey, connection with distant relatives or the beauty of the Icelandic culture that interested me the most. Each played a separate part but wove together perfectly. Beautiful story. Now I just need to book a flight to Iceland.

Very interesting, exciting want to keep reading & not put it down. Really got my interest.
Picture on the cover really got my attention. This extraordinary book
makes me want to go to Iceland.
After the author's father passed, he remembered that they had planned to visit Iceland. With a determination to connect with his roots, the son sets off for Iceland. I feel like A Pilgrimage to Iceland had a very slow setup, but once he actually gets to Iceland things become more interesting. Perhaps making a tighter narrative was difficult, because the book does honestly feel rather short.
I'd classify this more like a memoir, as there is little dialogue or "plot", but it is a tale constructed from John's notes that chronicle his travels and his emotions as he connects with Iceland. Some of the stories and folklore he tells are very interesting, like the story of how Irish monks cursed some land so that nobody who worshiped Norse gods could inhabit a certain area. I enjoyed the pictures, especially the beautiful shots of scenery. The writing is clear and direct; I don't have any complaints about typos or grammar.
People who enjoy exploring other countries through books will probably enjoy this. I didn't know about all the interesting sights Iceland has, and I feel the book did a good job informing me of that. But do keep in mind that the book reads more like a journal than a "proper story", if that is not what you're looking for.
